A review of NUT midline carcinoma.

Nut midline carcinomas are uncommon carcinomas characterized by chromosomal rearrangements that involve the gene encoding the nuclear protein of the testis (NUT). This article reviews the clinicopathologic features of these malignancies. Ancillary testing is discussed as well as the pathologic differential diagnosis.

NUT Midline Carcinoma: A Rare Malignancy.

Nuclear protein of the testis (NUT) midline carcinoma can present in the head, neck, and mediastinum. In general, it presents in young adult men and has a poor prognosis. We report on a case of NUT midline carcinoma of the mediastinum in a man 27 years of age without any prior malignancy. Due to the location of the tumor, mediastinal lymphoma and germ cell tumor were initially considered; howev...

The importance of diagnosing NUT midline carcinoma.

NUT midline carcinoma (NMC) is an aggressive subset of squamous cell carcinoma, genetically defined by rearrangement of the NUT gene. The rearrangements most often take the form of BRD4-NUT fusions, and in a minority of cases, BRD3-NUT or NUT-variant fusions. The simple karyotypes of NMCs, in contrast to the complex ones of typical squamous cell carcinoma, suggest an alternate, genetic shortcut...

NUT Midline Carcinoma Masquerading As a Thymic Carcinoma.

Introduction Thymic carcinomas are rare tumors that arise from the epithelium of the thymus gland and characterized by cytologic atypia, invasiveness, and high risk of relapse and death. The current WHO schema recognizes at least 11 histologic subtypes. Undifferentiated thymic carcinoma is one of the subtypes that can be indistinguishable from other poorly differentiated carcinomas such as NUT ...

Diagnosis of NUT midline carcinoma using a NUT-specific monoclonal antibody.

NUT midline carcinoma (NMC) is a uniformly lethal malignancy that is defined by rearrangement of the nuclear protein in testis (NUT) gene on chromosome 15q14. NMCs are morphologically indistinguishable from other poorly differentiated carcinomas, and the diagnosis is usually made currently by fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH). As normal NUT expression is confined to testis and ovary, we...
